Greetings from all of us at Alaska Raft & Kayak!
You are about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Completing one of Alaska’s rivers can be one of life’s most rewarding experiences. For us, it’s the last working mans escape from the world. Alaska is, simply put, humbling. With these few tips, I hope you can experience all Alaska’s rivers have to offer.
The first thing you must consider is the purpose of your float trip. What do you (or your group) want out of this trip? Sightseeing? Fishing or Hunting? What kind of animals do you want to see? Making us aware of all this information can better help us in assisting you.
Next, decide on how many people your party will consist of. By adding just one person, you could change all of your logistical planning. Outfitting companies, guides, and air taxis rely on what you tell them to quote prices. We understand changes can and do occur. Please keep us informed.
Even though we have the best rental equipment in Alaska, we try to replace it every year. We also have a full retail store on sight for your last minute trip needs and a full service shop for repairing rafts and making custom frames.
Alaska Raft and Kayak is one of the few places in Alaska that rents the cataraft. The catarafts are the pontoon style river rafts supported by a main frame. The cataraft is the perfect choice for float trips because they are extremely maneuverable and can carry huge loads of weight with extended cargo decks. The entire cataraft package can breakdown small enough to put in the back of a plane for fly out trips. The only drawback of a cataraft is they do tend to take a little more time to assemble.
We also rent the self-bailing, conventional round rafts. These rafts are great for their simplicity. All you do is pump the boat up, throw a frame on, and you are ready to go. The air floor on a self-bailer gives you more carrying capacity and they draw less water. The term “self-bailer” simply means that any water that comes in the boat immediately flushes out through the holes along the sides of the raft floor.
We like to put 2-3 people total in each raft. Usually this means around a 13′ raft for fishing trips and a 14′-15′ raft for hunting trips. We have witnessed an 18′ cataraft holding at least 3,000 lbs. of gear. Both the cataraft and the conventional round raft will be available to you.
Whether you know the exact river you want to float, or have no idea where to start, we can also help you in finding an Alaskan river that would best fit your needs. If you’ve already started searching on your own, it’s always a good idea to have a 1st and 2nd choice river located within the same drainage. Low or high water, changes in animal migrations, and changes in game regulations are all contributing factors to last minute river changes. Please do not choose a river beyond your own rowing ability. Safety is always our first priority, and we want to make sure you are comfortable and familiar with the raft and river before you leave. We carry several books that can aid you in choosing a river. Books such as Float Hunting Alaska’s Wild Rivers or The Alaska River Guide are an excellent place to start. These books offer a large variety of info on many Alaska rivers, including class ratings (1 being the easiest, 6 being a trip to visit Elvis), put-in and take-out points, helpful fishing/animal/hunting info, and much more. Always remember that water conditions can and do vary from day to day. The only substitute for experience is caution. Use your common sense!
You can help our staff by asking lots of questions. All of us wish this to be your “trip of a lifetime!” We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
