Cataraft Assembly

Cataraft Assembly

Components

4-side rails with break downs 8 pieces 5’ each for 10’ frame or 4’ each 8’ frame

4-verticals with low pro fittings and ubolts 14” high

3-bottom cross rails 41” wide (1 middle, 1 front, 1 rear)

3-1 upper cross bar with rowing seat 1 front and 1 back cross bar 72” each

2-oar stands with oarlocks

Ubolts, washers, nuts and low pro fittings

(Do not remove low pros from frames only the ubolts, tighten ubolts evenly or they will break)
1-Cargo module optional 3 short bars with lo-pros and 1 long bar, 2 loop straps and 1-mesh

16-1 to 4 foot straps

Important notes

· Do not secure ubolts until all assembly is completed.
· Tighten ubolts evenly or they will snap
· Loosen ubotls so the lo pro fittings and components can slide on the bars for tightening in place when assembly is completed
· Only disassemble the frame by the ubolts DO NOT REMOVE THE LO PRO FROM THE FRAME PIPE
· Only remove one set of nuts and bolts from the side rails breakdowns
· Put nuts and washers back on the side rail break downs and ubolts through the lo-pros so they will not get lost
· Recommend taking a 1\2 inch socket wrench for assembly
· Make sure all bolts are positioned not to rub on tubes (top side rails should be horizontal bottom side rails vertical and all ubolts should have the flat surface against the tubes and nuts away from tubes)
· On the aire tubes the zipper seam is on the inside side of the tube
· On the NRS tube the NRS symbol is on the front outside of the tube
· Inflate tubes to approx. 3-psi try to inflate chambers as equally as possible. Should be able to slightly indent tube with thumb when moderate pressure is applied
· May be necessary to ad air on cold days or release are on hot days so tubesare not under or over inflated

· You will need a Frame wrench or socket wrench with a ½ inch head (rentals frame wrench is in repair Kit)

Steps 1 connect side rails

each side rail is stamped by the breakdowns with 1, 2,3, and 4 dots by the male and female connection. (be sure to match the male and female side rail with 1 dot to each other, repeat with the other rails matching 2 with 2 and 3 with 3 and 4 with 4.

bolt together (Never remove the bolts on the inserted sleeve or breakdown connection that secures the sleeve to the rail).

Step 2 lay rails as shown

slide on back top cross bar

Step 3 attaches oar stands

at the break down connection. Make sure the nuts on the top rails are horizontal (if they are vertical they will rub a whole in your tubes)

Step 4 adjust seat bar general rule is 18 inches from the oar stands

Step 5 attach verticals to top front and back cross bars as shown, it is important to make sure the ubolts are positioned so the flat part of the bolts are against the tubes of the raft.

16 ½ “ from center of top rail. Crossbars are marked

Step 6 attach cargo floor as shown through both bottom side rails

Step 7 attach bottom side rails

to the verticals

Step 8 attach the bottom cross bars and foot bars

Step 9 attach the cargo floor to the cross bars and foot bars with zip ties provided or lace with parachute

cord

Step 10 square up frame and tighten

Step 11 attach frame to tubes

set frame so inside D-rings are just inside the corner of the front and back frame lo-pros and just below

the bottom cross bars

next attach a short 1 or 3 foot strap to the inside Middle D rings first.

(This will keep your tubes parallel to each other and not bowed in or out) next attach 3 or 4 foot straps to the out side middle D-rings

then the inside front

Step 11 continued and back

then outside front and back

yourstrap buckles should be positioned as shown so not to rube on tubes

Greetings from all of us at Alaska Raft & Kayak!

You are about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Completing one of Alaska’s rivers can be one of life’s most rewarding experiences. For us, it’s the last working mans escape from the world. Alaska is, simply put, humbling. With these few tips, I hope you can experience all Alaska’s rivers have to offer.

The first thing you must consider is the purpose of your float trip. What do you (or your group) want out of this trip? Sightseeing? Fishing or Hunting? What kind of animals do you want to see? Making us aware of all this information can better help us in assisting you.

Next, decide on how many people your party will consist of. By adding just one person, you could change all of your logistical planning. Outfitting companies, guides, and air taxis rely on what you tell them to quote prices. We understand changes can and do occur. Please keep us informed.

Even though we have the best rental equipment in Alaska, we try to replace it every year. We also have a full retail store on sight for your last minute trip needs and a full service shop for repairing rafts and making custom frames.

Alaska Raft and Kayak is one of the few places in Alaska that rents the cataraft. The catarafts are the pontoon style river rafts supported by a main frame. The cataraft is the perfect choice for float trips because they are extremely maneuverable and can carry huge loads of weight with extended cargo decks. The entire cataraft package can breakdown small enough to put in the back of a plane for fly out trips. The only drawback of a cataraft is they do tend to take a little more time to assemble.

We also rent the self-bailing, conventional round rafts. These rafts are great for their simplicity. All you do is pump the boat up, throw a frame on, and you are ready to go. The air floor on a self-bailer gives you more carrying capacity and they draw less water. The term “self-bailer” simply means that any water that comes in the boat immediately flushes out through the holes along the sides of the raft floor.

We like to put 2-3 people total in each raft. Usually this means around a 13′ raft for fishing trips and a 14′-15′ raft for hunting trips. We have witnessed an 18′ cataraft holding at least 3,000 lbs. of gear. Both the cataraft and the conventional round raft will be available to you.

Whether you know the exact river you want to float, or have no idea where to start, we can also help you in finding an Alaskan river that would best fit your needs. If you’ve already started searching on your own, it’s always a good idea to have a 1st and 2nd choice river located within the same drainage. Low or high water, changes in animal migrations, and changes in game regulations are all contributing factors to last minute river changes. Please do not choose a river beyond your own rowing ability. Safety is always our first priority, and we want to make sure you are comfortable and familiar with the raft and river before you leave. We carry several books that can aid you in choosing a river. Books such as Float Hunting Alaska’s Wild Rivers or The Alaska River Guide are an excellent place to start. These books offer a large variety of info on many Alaska rivers, including class ratings (1 being the easiest, 6 being a trip to visit Elvis), put-in and take-out points, helpful fishing/animal/hunting info, and much more. Always remember that water conditions can and do vary from day to day. The only substitute for experience is caution. Use your common sense!

You can help our staff by asking lots of questions. All of us wish this to be your “trip of a lifetime!” We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
